BlackBerry will stop making its own smartphones





BlackBerry said on Wednesday that it will stop manufacturing its own smartphones and will instead rely on outside sources.

This doesn’t mean you won’t see BlackBerry smartphones, they just won’t be built by BlackBerry. A good example of an early indication this was going to happen is the DTEK50, which is a spruced-up version of the Alcatel Idol 4 with BlackBerry software and security enhancements.

“Our new Mobility Solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum, including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia,” BlackBerry CEO John Chen said today, according to StreetInsider. The aforementioned partnership is with PT BB Merah Putih.

“Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications,” Chen continued. “The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”

Again, this doesn’t mean you won’t see new BlackBerry smartphones. It does suggest that you might not see the sort of unique devices that were built in-house, however.
